The page load lag can be avoided by using the Javascript Webfonts API loader. See View Source on www.ubuntu.com.

If you're serving fonts locally, you still need to ensure that you have them encoded for each of the needed browser formats and to return the appropriate one.

Nice article, exactly what I've been looking for and wanting to hear! We are embarking on a similar project at work and have chosen Alfresco to do everything (where I have some concerns), so reading your article is very timely.

I have a question: Where did you store the CRUD data and what mechanisms Ruby and Rails and Alfresco talk to each other - can you provide more details on the integration between the Ruby and Rails CRUD application and the Alfresco's Document Management and Worflow..?

It will be most appreciated, Thank You!!!

Yes Rob, the phrase is in the book. Search Google Books to find it. Good spot on the Mensa shirt. I remember seeing that too, but dismissed it as spurious given that it's based on one person's hazy recollections some 20 years after.

"And where did Bennis get the phrase from? A very likely candidate is science fiction writer, Poul Anderson. His post apocalyptic novel Orion Shall Rise dates from 1983."

I can't find a validation for this connection ... are you saying the phrase actually appears in that text or that the idea is somehow inspired by something else in the book?

Have a read of this ... down to the end.

The 1981 Mensa conference reference predates Orion Shall Rise's 1983 date.

Shadow, you might want to read the post properly; the Poul Anderson book I mention dates from 1983.

Not to offend, but the origins of the term "Cat Herding" dates back WELL before the book.

More than a decade before the book, if you want to just use a quick google usenet search as a verifier.

The first archived post showing the phrase dates back to May 29, 1987.

We have been using it in the IT industry for a long long time. It just fits.

All well and good if it worked that way, Paul. And it does so more or less beautifully with all Google's hosted fonts, except Droid Sans which doesn't. I say more or less because I've noticed the overhead which isn't noticeable normally really hits home on those occasional bad network days when calling Google takes a little longer than you'd like. Since writing the original post, I've found serving up the fonts locally to be a better route.

The CSS file that Google Font API is returning is specifically customised to the browser and version combination that requested it. Some browsers need
.ttf
files, some need
WOFF
,
EOT
or
SVG
. The magical part of the Google Font API is knowing which one to link to in the CSS…

By saving the generated CSS locally you will have saved the customised CSS for your particular browser, so it'll look great when you look at it, but not necessarily on everyone else's browser (which is the advantage of using the cross-browser Google Font API in the first place!). If you want Bold as well as Regular, you need to request it:

link="http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans:regular,bold"
